Ukrainian border guards daily detain 20-25 citizens evading military service, said Andrey Demchenko, speaker of the State Border Service of Ukraine, during a telethon.
Some Ukrainians are trying to leave the country illegally, using fake documents or offering bribes to border guards, while others are fleeing across borders, Demchenko said. At the same time, he noted that compared to 2022, there are fewer such draft dodgers, RBC reports .
“This year shows a decreasing trend because in 2022 there were more such cases, especially the first months when martial law was imposed. Then several groups, 80–90 violators, could be detained per day,” Demchenko said.
In early September, the border service spokesman reported that since February 24, 2022, border guards have detained about 14.6 thousand people who tried to illegally cross the border in the “green” zone – outside the checkpoints. A total of approximately 6.2 thousand people were detained at checkpoints with fake documents.
