The number of victims as a result of avalanches in Tajikistan has increased to 15 people. More than 30 were injured. This was reported in the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense of the country. MIR 24 correspondent Elena Shiryaeva spoke about the rescue operation.
Stones and a twisted pile of metal are all that remains of buildings after avalanches in eastern Tajikistan. The most difficult situation is near the city of Khorog. The block completely demolished four residential buildings, partially destroyed 22.
The avalanche descended on Wednesday morning. All because of warm weather and heavy rains. Under the snow was a bus with 10 passengers. People were injured and taken to the hospital. But there are those who did not survive. Among the dead are one driver, whose car was covered with snow, and local residents of a small village.
Rescuers are clearing multi-meter snowdrifts without stopping. They’re trying to find survivors. Where special equipment cannot pass, people shovel the snow with shovels, even by hand. Local people help.
President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon instructed to eliminate the consequences of the natural disaster as soon as possible and provide material assistance to the affected families.
According to weather forecasters, due to warming there is a high probability of new avalanches coming down . Residents were evacuated from dangerous areas.
