The Security Service of Ukraine reported that the country had nationalized the assets of Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska. This decision was made by the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court at the suit of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.
Nationalized assets totaling more than 10 billion hryvnia ($270 million). The court decision affected 350 facilities, including the Nikolaev Alumina Plant and a number of subsoil user companies (Glukhovsky quartzite quarry, Khustsky quarry, Zhezhelovsky quarry).
The SBU stated that Oleg Deripaska is “in the inner circle of the military-political leadership” of Russia. He, according to the SBU, managed enterprises through controlled commercial structures in different regions of Ukraine – and thus concealed his involvement in assets in the country.
Earlier, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine stated that in the process of preparing the lawsuit, the department received information that the aluminum producer UC Rusal, founded by Deripaska, supplies metal to the enterprises of the Russian defense complex. And some parts of aluminum products are made from raw materials mined on the territory of Ukraine – in particular, at the Nikolaev Alumina Refinery.
A spokesman for UC Rusal told Forbes that Deripaska had ceased control of the company as part of a 2018 deal with the US Treasury.
UC Rusal owned the Zaporozhye Aluminum Plant, but back in 2015, the Supreme Court of Ukraine returned the controlling stake in the enterprise (68.01%) to the state. Oleg Deripaska was sanctioned by Ukraine in October 2022.
