US sprinter Jim Hines, the first man to run the 100m in under 10 seconds, has died at the age of 76. He broke the record in 1968 when he recorded a hand-timed 9.9 seconds at the US Championships. Hines then broke his own record shortly after while winning gold at the 1968 Olympics, where an electronic timer in Mexico City recorded him at 9.95. His record held for nearly 15 years until Calvin Smith ran a time of 9.93 in 1983. That is the longest length of time an athlete has held the record for the men’s 100m since…
New York, London, Nassau (8/1 – 33) Dustin Johnson came out on top of 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series. In the first season of the new professional golf tour, now a fierce rival to the PGA Tour, Dustin Johnson was crowned “Individual Champion”. The former PGA Tour player won the LIV Golf Invitational Boston on 4 September 2022. Johnson also collected total 135 points from 7 events in the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series. The 38-year-old American snatched First Place in the final individual points standings. He came in ahead of Branden Grace (South Africa), Peter Uihlein (USA) and Patrick…
A jury in Los Angeles has found US actor Danny Masterson guilty on two out of three counts of rape. The star of That ’70s Show, a TV series, faces up to 30 years in prison. He was led from court in handcuffs. Three women, all former members of the Church of Scientology, accused the actor of sexual assault at his Hollywood home from 2001-03. Prosecutors argued Masterson had relied on his status as a prominent Scientologist to avoid accountability. The jury of seven women and five men was unable to reach a verdict on a third count after a…
North Korea on Saturday (Jan 28) denounced US pledges of battle tanks to Ukraine, claiming Washington was “further crossing the red line” to win hegemony by proxy war, state media KCNA reported. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s powerful sister, Kim Yo Jong, made the remarks in a statement carried by KCNA, saying that North Korea will “stand in the same trench” as Russia against the United States. The United States said this week it would supply Ukraine with 31 of its most advanced battle tanks after Germany made a similar announcement. This scrapped a taboo in Western support for Ukraine’s battle…
BOSTON – A man from Virginia says the Registry of Motor Vehicles is forcing him to register his car in Massachusetts even though he doesn’t live or work here. That story led several WBZ-TV viewers to reach out with their own frustrations about the registry. What are the laws in Massachusetts for out of state drivers? The RMV says under chapter 90, section 3 of state law “no motor vehicle or trailer shall be operated on more than thirty days in the aggregate in any one year.” In other words, anyone who uses a vehicle in Massachusetts for 30 days of the…
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the BBC that he would not make territorial concessions. According to him, a compromise on the status of Donbass, Crimea and the southern territories will be a “bomb in the center of Europe.” “We are going to Europe, Ukraine has chosen this path. All this cannot be lost. Ukraine wants security guarantees, we all want it – we are united. Therefore, any territorial compromises will only weaken our state,” the President of Ukraine said. He also rejected the opportunity to compromise with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “The question is not in the word…
Indoor Christmas trees and electricity can make a perfect – and perfectly dangerous – holiday match. Christmas tree fires are “a very small but notable” part of the fire problem in the United States, according to a report from the National Fire Protection Association. The analysis from the Massachusetts-based nonprofit includes estimates of the frequency of home fires involving Christmas trees and is reportedly based on data from the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Incident Reporting System, as well as survey data. Blazes that begin with an ignited Christmas tree account for less than 0.1% of all reported home fires, the report says.…
Nearly 177 million Americans – or more than half the US population – will await Christmas weekend under wind chill alerts as a major arctic blast plunges temperatures to dangerous levels in much of the country, according to the National Weather Service. And the snowiest part is yet to come as the perilous winter storm barrels east across the nation. A developing “bomb cyclone” is set to unload heavy snow and blizzard conditions especially in the Midwest on Thursday and Friday. The cold air and storm are affecting nearly every state in some way: More than 200 million people coast-to-coast…
